Robert Burns-jubileum

Walter Scott har fått det høgste monumentet etter seg i Edinburgh, men Robert Burns er større i ord. Den store lyriker - 1759-1796 - markeres hele dette året med sine 250 år.

Han var inspirert av Skottlands landskaper, folkeliv og sanger. Diktene hans kan være både lyse og humoristiske eller mørke og følsomme. Han er nok mest kjent for diktet "Auld Lang Syne". Lyrikken er av stor betydning for skotsk stolthet og selvfølelse. Fødselsdagen - 24. januar - blir feiret som en uoffisiell skotsk nasjonaldag, "Burns Night".

The term "librarian" does not fit the bill any more

Playing a joke on somebody? Det er noe merkelig med at man skal finne opp nye ord på ting og funksjoner som er pregnant. En bibliotekar arbeider i et bibliotek som må kunne sies å være et bokhus i klassisk forstand. Funksjoner endrer seg, nye tjenester kommer til og brukerne endrer seg. Like fullt er det et bibliotek og bibliotekarene gjør jobben med god hjelp av dagens teknologi.

Anyway...litt forskrekket over å se hvordan konflikter bygger seg opp i Scotlands vakreste by Edinburgh der noen byråkrater har kommet på ...
"One of the main issues facing staff are plans to introduce self-service borrowing sysmtem - similar to those found at supermarket checkouts - which would allow customers to borrow books by scanning them in and out themselves". Det er også meningen å ..."shake-up the city's library service, staff are set to be re-branded as 'audience development officers'. ( Whow!)
The move would result in 40 librarians potentially losing their jobs over the next three years, og fagforeningen sier: We balloted our members and there was 95 per cent rejection of proposals to change working condition. Man kan vel ikke alltid stole på spokesman for the council, men jeg synes bibliotekkolleger opptrer litt museumsaktig her. Hvorfor ikke gå inn og påvirke endringen i positiv retning. In the wake of a long-term decline in the number of books being borrowed, city leaders are keen to reshape the city's network of 25 community libraries. This involve librarians talking on a more educational role, such as running computer courses, holding talks and encouraging young readers through reading groups.

There's noe cure for stupidity:
